Since 1985, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) has organized a series of international conferences, mainly focused on the presentation and discussion of relevant topics regarding Pavement Assets Management.

The First versions of these conferences were organized in North America. However, since 1994 the conference became an international meeting. So far, seven conferences have taken place in different countries, which are described in detail as follows:
The First Conference was held in Toronto, Canada, in 1985 as the result of a growing activity on Pavement Assets Management and the high interest from the international community in this field. The Technical Committee at the Transportation Research Board provided a meeting place for attendants to present and share their theoretical and practical knowledge.
The Second Conference was held once again in Toronto, Canada, in 1987. The conference was mainly focused on the existing systems for Pavement Assets Management and the implementation of such systems in professional fields.
The Third Conference was held in San Antonio, United States, in 1994. The number of sponsors increased considerably and pre-conference tutorials were conducted for the first time. The main topics discussed in the conference were:
- Effectiveness and Efficiency of Pavement Assets Management.
- Benefits from Support in the Decision-making Process.
- Technological Advances in Pavement Assets Management.
The Fourth Conference was held in Durban, South Africa in 1998. It was the first time the Conference was held outside North America. For the first time activities such as technical tours, workshops and poster sessions were developed. Pre-conference tutorials were also conducted. The main topics defined in this conference were:
- Tools used for Pavement Assets Management.
- Implementation of Management Systems.
- Sustainability and Implementation of Pavement Assets Management.
The Fifth Conference was held in Seattle, United States, in 2001. The main topic was “Reducing the Gap between Vision and Reality”, being the main themes of the conference:
- Pavement Assets Management Systems and Requirements from Agencies.
- Integration between Pavement Asset Management and Facilities/National Treasure Management.
- Data collection and Data Analysis.
- Implementation of Pavement Assets Management in Construction and Maintenance Programs.
- Use of innovative approaches.
The Sixth Conference was held in Queensland, Australia in 2004. The main tropic was “Lessons, Challenges and the Right Path to be followed“. Main topics were:
- Communicating the Message.
- The Right Path to be followed on Pavement Assets Management.
- Transference of Results.
- Contractors’ Common Practices.
- Pavement Assets Management in Developing Countries.
The Seventh and last Conference was recently held in Calgary, Canada in 2008. The main topic was “Preserving what we have…… Investing in our future……. Getting the Balance“. (www.icmpa2008.com). The topics were divided into four areas:
- Maintenance
- Investment
- Information
- Measurement
